Approximately 4,000 new cases of HIV are thought to occur each year in New York City, out of approximately 40,000 nationwide. Rapid identification of these "acute HIV infections" (AHIs) could help slow the HIV/AIDS epidemic and may aid the treatment of these individuals' HIV infections. Despite the inportance of AHI for public health, treatment, and research, few cases of AHI have been identified in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut tri-state region. The purposes of the conference are to:

  • Update and educate the HIV research community about AHI; and
  • Provide a forum for the development of potential initiatives and interventions for identification of AHI; prevention of HIV transmission from acutely infected individuals to others; and the development of an integrated behavioral and biomedical research agenda regarding AHI.
