High rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been found among biological males who define themselves as females (trans women). This study identified the behavioral and risk factors for HIV and other STIs among this group. Trans women were recruited and tested for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and hepatitis B and C. Prevalence and incidence rates years were determined. HIV negative participants were tracked to determine changes in their risk factors and HIV and STI infection or reinfection. Aspects of injection drug use (for illicit drugs and female hormones) and high-risk sexual behavior were evaluated as behavioral modes of HIV and STI transmission. The study also explored associations among economic hardships, paid sex work, and validation sex (seeking out sexual relationship to legitimize a sense of themselves as females). Findings from this study will inform future interventions aimed at this population.
