An Ethno-epidemiological Study to Advance HIV Prevention and Treatment for PWUD
Funded by: National Institute on Drug Abuse
Project dates: May 2017 - April 2024
Principal Investigator: McNeil, Ryan
Principal Investigator: Small W (contact PI)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this project is to employ an ethno-epidemiological approach to examine influences on the acceptability, feasibility, and implementation of emerging and prospective biomedical, systems-level, and programmatic interventions to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS and manage key co-morbidities among people who use drugs (PWUD).

A supplement to the project will examine the public health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and related responses among PWUD living with HIV. Engagement with the HIV continuum of care may be heavily complicated during the pandemic (e.g., by service disruptions, public health restrictions, and reduction of face-to-face service interactions), so understanding the unique challenges of providing care to PWUD living with HIV during this time is urgently needed. The study will inform the development of a range of policies by documenting the impacts of COVID-19 on care for PWUD living with HIV and help optimize evolving public health measures to facilitate improved treatment outcomes.
