Cross-Border HIV Prevention Project: China and Vietnam
Funded by: National Institute on Drug Abuse
Project dates: September 2001 - July 2006
Principal Investigator: Hammett T
Co-Investigator: Des Jarlais, Don C. (Co-Investigator)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In some areas of Southern China and neighboring northern Vietnam, there were extremely high rates of HIV among injection drug users (IDUs). This border area had been affected by large-scale drug trafficking and cross-border movement related to small-scale drug purchase and use, and had very limited HIV prevention activities.

The project developed and evaluated an HIV prevention intervention for injection drug users (IDUs) that included peer educators. The intervention was a comprehensive, peer education model embracing elements of social marketing of sterile injection equipment, risk reduction for drug users, public health infection control, and community education and mobilization. This was the first-ever intervention designed to prevent cross-border HIV transmission. The project also sought to improve cross-border collaboration regarding prevention interventions and policy research and development.
