Dynamics of Retail Methamphetamine Markets in New York City
Funded by: National Institute of Justice
Project dates: January 2007 - December 2009
Principal Investigator: Wendel T
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

New York City methamphetamine markets received little attention until growing levels of methamphetamine use and associated HIV risk behaviors in the MSM community began to demand greater concern. The project evaluated a new enhanced version of respondent-driven sampling, a way of recruiting participants by having current participants recruit their peers.  They also documented and described the demographics and drug use behaviors of the sample, as well as the social networks and market behaviors of users, buyers, and sellers of methamphetamine.  The research provided important and timely information for policymakers and practitioners dealing with problems caused by both methamphetamine use and methamphetamine distribution.
